We have been delivering transformational school visits to farms for over eleven years now, and have been overjoyed to hear the questions and discussions that it has stimulated, between students and farmers, between students, and even between teachers and farmers. Students leave with a deeper fascination about our interdependence with nature, a more mature understanding of the endeavours and risks undertaken by farmers who are at the mercy of the weather and international economics for their livelihood, a profound empathy for the animals’ welfare, and a greater confidence about their eating decisions into the future. As a subject, it stands head-and-shoulders above all the other topics that we teach, at all ages, when measured by the transformational effects that the experience has.
